Since graduating from a Japanese university (BA in commerce) in 2000, I have been working for three different Japanese companies (two manufacturers and one logistics), and decided to move to Brussels in 2003.

My first OU experience was in 2008 when I was promoted to assistant manager, and my employer gave me the opportunity to follow a management course. The OU course looked ideal as I work fulltime and have to regularly travel abroad. I took the “Certificate in Management”, which is one of the entry paths to the MBA. I was very nervous at the beginning, as I had not taken any academic courses since graduation, and had never studied outside of Japan either! However, thanks to a well-structured study method and efficient tutoring, not only could I complete the course but I even decided to continue towards the MBA (I am currently undertaking the “Diploma in Management”).

The OU has been giving me two great learning experiences:

• Constant reflection on my work: As I study and work in parallel, I am forced to apply the course concepts to the real world. This exercise not only gives a critical view on the course concepts but also strengthen my work knowledge. I can clearly feel my personal growth in day-to-day business scenes (e.g. It is very useful for negotiations with customers and/or presentations to colleagues, etc).
• Networking: The residential school is a real opportunity to meet people with similar goals but various backgrounds. This diversity gives students a good idea of what it is to work in a global environment; this, I believe, is essential for Japanese business people who have contacts with global corporations.

As mentioned earlier, I am still undertaking the 1st step of the MBA course and plan to continue my study for a few more years. I sincerely hope I will soon be able to interact with other students from Japan!

私は2000年に日本の大学の商学部を卒業し、日系の物流会社とメーカーに勤務。また2003年よりベルギーのブリュッセルに住んでいます。
2008年、アシスタントマネジャーに昇格したことを機に、マネジメントコースの受講機会を与えられました。それが私にとってのオープン・ユニバーシティとの出会いです。

フルタイムの仕事を持ち、定期的に出張機会のある私にとって、オープン・ユニバーシティのコースは理想的に思えました。コースは、ＭＢＡプログラムに編入可能な “Certificate in Management”を選びました。留学経験がない上に、大学を卒業してから久しくアカデミックな勉強をしていなかったので最初は大変緊張しました。しかし、効果的なチュータ指導とよく構成された学習メソッドのおかげで、コースを無事修了できただけでなく、ＭＢＡに進学することになったのです。私は現在、“Diploma in Management”取得を目指して勉強中です。

私が体験した、オープン・ユニバーシティが特に優れている点は以下の2つです。

• 常に自らの仕事を顧みること：オープン・ユニバーシティは、勉学と仕事を並行しながら、コースの概念を現場に応用することが求められます。この経験は、コースで学ぶ概念に対するクリティカルな視点を養うだけではなく、自らの業務知識を強化することができます。毎日のビジネスシーンにおいて、確実に自らの成長を感じることができます。（たとえば、顧客との交渉や社内会議においてのプレゼンテーションなどでとても参考になっています。）
• 人脈ネットワークの構築： レジデンシャルスクール（短期集中スクーリング）では、同じようなゴールを目指す様々なバックグラウンドの人たちと出会うことができます。これによって、学生はグローバル環境におけるビジネスがどんなものなのかを知ることができます。これは、グローバル企業との接点がある日本のビジネスパーソンにとっても貴重な体験になると思います。

先に述べたように、私はまだ、ＭＢＡの第１ステップを通過中です。これから数年、私のオープン・ユニバーシティでの学習は続きます。日本の学生の皆さんと近いうちにお会いできるのを楽しみにしています！
